March 03, 2010
A man has been jailed for abusing a boy while giving him lessons in the Koran.
Atta Ur-Rehman, 38, was found guilty of a number of sex offences against the young victim.
Appearing at Bolton Crown Court , he was sentenced to six years in jail.
He attacked the boy at an address in Rochdale in May last year where he was supposed to be giving lessons in reading the Muslim holy book.
The boy, who was upset and embarrassed, told his mother about what happened.
Ur-Rehman – of Hearies Road, Sheffield – at first feigned ignorance when confronted by the parents, but then asked the boy's parents for forgiveness.
The boy's parents then called the police.
Detective Constable Kirsty Simcox, who investigated the case, said: "Ur-Rehman abused the trust the victim's parents placed in him in the most terrible way.
"The boy showed immense courage to confide in his mother, and thankfully his parents then came to the police to ensure justice could be done.”
